AHCC President Steve Cannif recently called to our attention some spammy, suspicious emails that some Arlington Heights residents had been receiving that appeared to originate from the President of Arlington Heights Civic Club and which asked the email recipient to purchase Amazon gift cards on behalf of the civic club.
This is an old scam, but it now has a new twist. The scammers have figured out that they can pull on people’s heart strings by couching the scam request in pleas to help disadvantaged people affected by COVID and the current pandemic. While you have to admire their creativity, they are quite cheeky.
Please be aware that no Arlington Heights Civic Club officer or director will send an *unsolicited* email to any resident making such a request. Feel free to delete, block and send to your spam folder any such emails. If you receive such an email and think it could be legitimate, please reach out to the purported sender in a separate email (do not click on any links in the suspicious email or hit “reply” to that email) and verify whether it was actually sent by them or is indeed spam.
Here are links to some articles discussing these spam emails, how they operate, and what you can do about them.
